Currently, farmers auction their agriculture produce at physical markets also known as market yards or mandis in India which are regulated by each state under the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act. The sales process in mandis is regulated through commission agents (CAs) who mediate between the farmers and traders. Farmers are mostly exploited by these CAs as their produce gets lower price realisation, there is a lack of transparency in the trading process, collusion among traders, price cartelisation, delay in payments, etc. After passing the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act in 2020, farmers are now allowed to sell outside the mandis in India as well as across different states, as previously it wasn’t permitted.

On the flipside with the governments initiative to promote better transparency in price discovery through a transparent auction process based on the quality of produce along with timely online payment, they started e-Mandis and this gave rise to the formation of many private e-Mandis (online mandi). According to eNam website as of date, there are 1,000 markets that are linked to the eNAM network from 18 states and 3 UT’s. e-Mandis provide a Pan-India electronic trading portal that networks the existing mandis in India and has led to the creation of a unified national market for agricultural commodities. One of the major players in the e-mandi segment is Agribazaar. Since the inception of e-Mandis, farmers can now benefit as there is immediate trade settlement, near to zero mandi expenses, payments within few hours of trade settlement and direct price negotiation with the buyers, whereas Millers have benefited as there is complete transparency on stock bought and the stock showed (reconciliation of kaccha parcha and physical stock), bidding from the buyer and not the purchaser and zero freight for storage of goods in a godown.

e-Mandis has empowered farmers and has helped build an ecosystem that provides them with the freedom to sell their produce, have multiple trading options, get remunerative prices and an effective barrier-free agricultural market. Most farmers have been unhappy with the current sale system of mandis in India and e-Mandis is the answer to eliminate the current irregularities with the mandis in India.
