Production trend and Stock position

  • As per the Ministry of Agriculture third advance estimate released on May 25, 2021, Bengal gram production was 126.1 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) compared to FY 2019-20 which was 110.8 LMT, up by 13.81 percent
  • Stock positions of Bengal gram at National Commodity Clearing Limited (NCCL) approved warehouses at Akola, Bikaner, Indore and Jaipur locations were up by 1.92 percent. The stocks held as on June 11, 2021 was 83,203 MT as compared to May 11, 2021 which was at 81,633
  • As per Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGIS), India’s export of Bengal gram (Desi Chana) for 2020-21 (April-February) was 51,478.77 MT valued at ₹ 295.17 crore and imports for the same period was 1.38 LMT valued at ₹ 663.89 crore
  • The Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (GSCSCL) had reopened its 188 Bengal gram procurement centres across the state since May 24, 2021, as the government eased restrictions

For the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall during this year’s pre-monsoon season till June 2, 2021 is above Long Period Average (LPA) by 75 percent. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad geographical regions of India are given below:

Market commentary: Price outlook

  • The Government had increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Bengal Gram by 4.62 percent to ₹ 5,100 per quintal for Rabi marketing year (MY) 2021-22 compared to ₹ 4,875 in 2020-21
  • Overall Bengal Gram prices have seen a downward correction and weak movement is expected in the immediate / short term
